OPEN POSITION: Business Development Director

To make Askel known as the leading cartilage repair firm, and to prepare our market launch, we are now looking for a Director Business Development to join our team.

We aim to offer the best early treatment option for cartilage defects to prevent further joint degradation and osteoarthritis. We at Askel do not stop at treating symptoms; we go a step further and provide truly regenerative solutions for the long-term benefit of the patients.

Scope of Role

The role will be instrumental in creation of long-term value for customers, partners and building other key relationships. Preparing a successful market introduction of Askel’s COPLA cartilage repair solution including selection of priority markets, sales channels and business partners will be essential in the role. The role will report to Dr Virpi Muhonen, CEO and Co-Founder of Askel Healthcare. The position is preferably based in Helsinki and in the long-run, frequent travelling will be required.


Principal Duties & Responsibilities (not exhaustive):

Market insight

  • Lead all aspects of market data generation which help to form decisions about market selection and prioritization. Feed data and make presentations for internal use, investors and business partners when it comes to developing market sizing models, revenue forecasts etc.


Value proposition and market position

  • Work closely with clinicians and other stakeholders in developing COPLA’s clinical and economic benefits and translating them into strong messaging for healthcare providers, buyers, distributors and other strategic partners
  • Map the patient pathway from pre-operation to rehabilitation in collaboration with clinicians and identify value-added products and digital services
  • Form a compelling value proposition and market positioning for COPLA based on thorough analysis of competition and alternative cartilage treatment solutions


Go-to market and business model

  • Develop a targeting and customer segmentation strategy with the goal to identify the top customer segments to initially target and go after
  • Develop the appropriate pricing and business models for COPLA to ensure profitable growth for the company
  • Lead the development of a value dossier to initiate early discussion with payors to seek reimbursement for COPLA (with external help where required)
  • Develop the value proposition for corporate partners and identify for each target the right people to approach
  • Identify potential distributors / dealers / sales agents within the identified priority markets and initiate & manage negotiations



  • Proven track record leading or being a key contributor in the business development activities in a similar role within the medical device industry (preferably within a start-up environment)
  • Knowledge of the European and possibly U.S. healthcare landscape (understanding of key market trends and involved stakeholders including providers, patients and payors)
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, able to collect and analyse market data, prioritize critical focus areas, generate strategic plans and turn them into execution
  • In depth capabilities to navigate in the market and build personal relationships with the key actors in the ecosystem (clinicians, customers, partners etc).
  • Good negotiating skills and experience in managing business relationships
  • Ability to spot business and partnership opportunities with entrepreneurial spirit
  • Previous experience and an existing network in musculoskeletal healthcare / orthopaedics seen as a plus
  • Minimum Master’s degree in business, science, or related field
